Personality disorders are widespread and present a major challenge in most areas of health care. They can be difficult to treat, complicate the management and adversely affect the outcome of other conditions, and exert a disproportionate effect on the workload of staff dealing with them. Finding appropriate placement for sufferers can cause difficulties for doctors and the courts. (Figure 1) © British Medical Journal 1997.
